Everyone is OK

Yesterday afternoon I got a call from my “birthday boy” brother, Thad. I thought he was calling to chat about life, his job, or the growing awareness of his own mortality now that he was 25. I couldn’t have been more wrong.

It turns out that my mom was involved in a pretty serious car accident. Some Hunyak pulled out in front of her and she swerved to miss him. In the process, she rolled her car and sustained some injuries to her right hand and lower left leg. I talked to her last night around 10 and she seemed groggy but thankful she was alive – God bless her seatbelt.

I’m going to call her this morning and see if the painkillers and muscle relaxants are doing their jobs. I just can’t believe that I was going about my day – hanging out by the stick, looking at a thing in a bag – and all of a sudden this happened. I was almost on the verge of tears last night thinking about how terrible this could have been.

Mom, I love you. I’m thinking of you. I hope you feel better soon.
