Perception vs Reality

Jenn and I have been a little down recently because our bodies have adjusted to parenting life by insulating themselves with a pillowy layer of fat. Our collective body images have taken a pretty severe hit and the rapidly-approaching “Secular Winter Holiday & Shopping Extravaganza” (formerly known as Christmas) has got us down. We’re not happy about the prospect of cookies, cakes, pies, ice cream and all the other foodstuffs that seem to be everywhere this time of year.

I’m not normally one to sit idly by and complain, but my willpower is ebbing at just the right time to catch the calories flowing. My attraction to Jenn, however, remains steadfast and that’s a two-way street. This should be encouraging news to all you non-married types. Sure, we don’t exactly look like supermodels (and probably never did), but we’re still very much in love and very attracted to one another.

I guess sometimes you just fear the worst when you look in the mirror. We’re trying to be good and we both have every intention to pull the “lose weight” New Year’s resolution trump card out of the deck this year. It just seems to me, though, that we’re both outrageously happy with our flabby, stay-at-home-with-baby lives enough not to care too awful much about 10 extra pounds.

Okay, twenty.

I’m reminded of a really cool quote I just recently read: “We are always paid for our suspicion by finding what we suspect.” – Henry David Thoreau

I guess if you want to find problems you will, so don’t go looking when things are this good.

I’ll be getting off my high horse now, as the altitude was making me preachy.
