No one expects the Muppet Acquisition

A news flash from Muppet Central News alerted me to the fact that Disney has purchased Jim Henson’s Muppets and Bear (in the Big Blue House) for purposes of providing strategic advice on the use of the characters. There is also a production deal for TVs and Movies rolled into the agreement, but basically the Mouse is now going to pursue frog copyright infringers with the same zeal they use in their own “Mickey Mouse” legal battles (pardon the pun).

I’m not too happy about this. First Farscape gets cancelled and now this. I understand that Roy Disney is hot to recapitulate the Disney name as wholesome and fun, but did he have to buy the Henson legacy, the Muppets, outright? I realize Disney and Henson ha’ve been in bed for a while, see Muppets in 3D, but Disney didn’t OWN The Muppets.

Now I have to worry about some overindulgent legal department Cease-and-Desisting this blog into nonexistence. Not what I want to worry about on a daily basis.

I suppose it could be worse. They could have announced plans to bring back Muppets Tonight. Bleagh!

Jim Henson is dead. Long live Jim Henson.
