May Day

So today is May 1st, a day known ’round the world as May Day. It’s really a mash-up of quite a few Spring-time pagan festivities, International Worker’s Day and a bank holiday.

Basically, it’s an excuse to rally, party or get off of work. An all-purpose day of slack – now that’s something I can get behind.

In a strange twist of fate, Mayday is also an international code word signalling distress.

So both Mayday and May Day are bigger than just their Western European roots, they’re internationally recognized.

Learning is fun! 🙂

Now if only I could stop conflating a Maypole with a Gallows Pole, I’d have a good May Day without having to scream Mayday.
