So I’m just about ready to jump head-first into Azeroth and the World or Warcrack, having just purchased a 14-day trial version from Best Buy yesterday.
I have a few questions first.
- Best character class?
- What utilities do I need?
- What websites should I bookmark?
- Should I write something for the Azeroth Metblog?
I’ll withhold saying “race” because I’m sensitive like that, but I’m really curious what a newbie/n00b should do in the scant 2 weeks I have.
Any special software or cool gadgets, gizmos or desktop widgets that would enhance my experience?
Since I’m starting fresh, I’d love to start prepared.
The official site is a no-brainer, but what other communities and sites should I use for FAQ (like these) and general information?
This one is a bit more philosophical, but since I’m already a Metblog author, I’m thinking of pitching Sean on the idea of a series of posts written from a beginner’s perspective.
I’m late in joining this trend – kind of a bandwagon follower, really – but I can’t be the only one. I think it’d be instructive for the community and fun for the outsiders to report on what it’s like to start playing an already popular MMOG.
I likely won’t start playing until I have more time on the weekend, but I’m curious to see what I should be doing during the week to prepare myself.
And, yes, I’ve watched the South Park episode but I’ll probably find it funnier in the future.

Two comments in one day may be overkill, but I just wanted to say that you should definitely blog about the experience SOMEWHERE. I’ve been considering that game for about a year, but can’t bring myself to try it (I’m in a strange “game glut” at the moment). So I’d love to hear what you think of the experience as a total newbie…
When you get experienced to WoW and MMO controls and interfaces in general, give Everquest 2 a try. Much better graphics, much deeper lore than WoW. WoW is a great MMO if you have never played an MMO before though.

It’s Friday and I’m lazy, so here’s a fairly rote post on my new computer a Dell Dimension E521:

All the classes have strengths IMO. For a newbie, I would suggest a hybrid class: hunter, shaman, paladin or druid b/c they will give you the greatest flexibility in different situations. Unfortunately, these are less critical (or maybe there are just more of them) in party situations. They have roles to play, but you will quickly see that every party needs tanks (warriors) and healers (priests). Trouble is that these classes can take time to be good enough at to really do well because they are so specialized and they are not as strong for individual leveling (aka “grinding”) so it can sometimes take longer to level. Just my opinion here, I’m sure there are priests/warriors/etc that will strongly disagree. I’m just looking at it from a first-timer perspective.
