For a newbie, I would suggest a hybrid class: hunter, shaman, paladin or druid b/c they will give you the greatest flexibility in different situations. Unfortunately, these are less critical (or maybe there are just more of them) in party situations. They have roles to play, but you will quickly see that every party needs tanks (warriors) and healers (priests). Trouble is that these classes can take time to be good enough at to really do well because they are so specialized and they are not as strong for individual leveling (aka "grinding") so it can sometimes take longer to level. Just my opinion here, I'm sure there are priests/warriors/etc that will strongly disagree. I'm just looking at it from a first-timer perspective. All the classes have strengths IMO. Much better graphics, much deeper lore than WoW. WoW is a great MMO if you have never played an MMO before though.
