Lost: Flashes Before Your Eyes

Wow! We haven’t seen a episode like Flashes Before Your Eyes before. I’ve never been so unsure about whether or not I was watching one of those signature flashbacks.

I think the one thing that is abundantly clear is that the time travel elements are here to stay. Mittelos’ “lost time” is only the beginning if Desmond can see the future. The question is, will it make a difference?

Here are my bullet points:

  • Deadpool
  • I think if you have Charlie in any of the various Lost deadpolls you ought to put a victory notch on your belt right now.

Conversely, I think the whole thing might be a huge red herring. Maybe the past is the past, but the future is still unwritten.

By the way, haven’t we seen the mysterious, silver-haired shopwoman before? She seems like she’s had an appearance either as a different character or in another flashback?

Also, since I’m munging bullet points: Wonderwall lyric “maybe, you’re gonna be the one that saves me” being sung by Charlie in the past as Desmond tries to stave off the inevitable(?) in the present(?)

  • Widmore’s office
  • Plenty of godd stuff here. Parcel 8:15. The polar bear painting. This bullet point encompasses all of the stuff I saw (and likely missed) that relates to island mythology appearing in Desmond’s past. I’ll include the microwave beep/hatch beep in here as well, even though that occurred in Desmond’s flat.

I’m still trying to figure out the significance of McCutcheon beyond the superficial, but I think it exists. Anyone know if it’s a real brand and if the story of Anderson McCutcheon holds water?

  • Desmond and Penny as Jin and Sun / Coward
  • Nothing more than a mental note that their paths are very similar, but where Jin is brave, Desmond is cowardly. Both end up in the same place, so maybe the universe is course correcting after all.

  • Hieronymous
  • Charlie’s middle name, according to the sign in his guitar case.

Read up on Hieronymous machines and let me know what you think. Should Charlie (or Desmond) be building something? A new computer schematic they could push with their minds?

I’m confused, but I know nothing is accidental in this show. Maybe it’s a reference to the works of Hieronymous Bosch. That’d certainly fit with the themes of sin and forgiveness on the show.

  • Witches
  • In my mind, we have two Wizard of Oz references.

First, the man in the faux Converse (was that a Dharma symbol?) being crushed by the scaffolding.

Second, I kind of see the shopwoman as a kind of good witch, like Glinda, but maybe that’s just me.

I think that’s all I have. Chime in with a comment.

The scene with Desmond and the Shopwoman reminded me of the scene of Keanu Reeves and the Oracle lady in the Matrix. Also, it seems as if Desmond “goes” to the island when he has been unconscious (falling off the ladder and when he is hit in the bar).

  2. My money’s on Chahlie not dying. Seems to easy and the plot benefit of bucking fate… Way too good to pass up. You’re brilliant for catching that “Wonderwall” line. Fucking brilliant! That’s why it’s hard to believe you didn’t catch the parcel as being “4 8 15” and not just “815”. Heh. There was so much in this episode that man, you just had to miss something. Hieronymus == “Heroin Yum” Heh.

Just wanted to comment that Desmond is the next in the line of characters who have the same last name as a famous philosopher. We have Locke and Rousseau, now we have Hume, too.
There was something else that I noticed, but so help me, it’s gone now.

  4. RSL, you never cease to amaze me. Wonderful catches.

I probably miss things because Jenn has me on a clock after the episode. She wants us to get to bed at a decent hour, so I speed-blog.

  5. I [obviously] don’t blog until the next day. Most of the post is my own observations but I [again obviously] do glean from the internets as well. Your “Wonderfwall” find though makes up for anything else today. Where’s my bowing in submission emoticon?

  6. RSL, you’re too kind. Your recap is always great.

The wife is actually getting quite pissed at all my rewinding during the episode, so I have to be more observant than normal.

Still, I think I do all right and my theories aren’t too crazy.

Another blog also points out that Charlie’s middle name could be an anagram for “Heroin’s Yum.” I thought that was pretty clever myself!

  8. Seth, lemme encourage the crazy theories. You know I’m a sucker for ’em. We don’t have Tivo but we do have a group of about three to six Lost fans watching at any time. So we rewind by talking about it. Heh. Seriously, though… Crazy theories is where it’s at.

  9. One thing I noticed, that none of you probably did. was on the poster for “The Royal Scots,” the art department should hang their heads in shame for spelling HONOUR as HONOR when it’s supposedly set in London

    for shame
