Video Hits One

Right before I went on my Mexican vacation, I caught a glimpse of this year’s internet hit video, Mute Math – Typical:

It’s one of those songs that has enough raw energy and directness that a video like this one really draws out all the possibility from the music. It’s this year’s Ok Go video (pick your version).

The fact that the video is one, long contiguous shot made me think of another recent video that’s basically a one-take wonder, Feist – 1 2 3 4

There’s a Making of feature video, directed by Patrick Daughters (Director’s version). This video is the basis for that iPod ad that’s now a viral hit in it’s own right, but the original is still better. One shot, one video, amazing.

For my money, though, one of the best uses of out-of-time (pun intended) video production is R.E.M. – Imitation of Life. Garth Jennings made an instant masterpiece that never got the rotation (radio airplay or MTV) that it deserved.

Ahead of it’s time and recursive fun, I believe the actual “video” for the song lasts about 15 – 20 seconds and the resulting editing makes it appear to run the length of the song. It’s brilliant.

All great videos. Enjoy!
