Happy Hanukkah!

Tonight, Jenn, the kids and I will be spending some time celebrating Hanukkah with some of Jenn’s Jewish co-workers. Having never experienced the “Festival of Lights” in person – save for the blue lights on some neighboring houses – it should be fun.

In fact, the closest I’ve come to the religious and cultural observations of the Jewish people/faith was a Bar Mitzvah when I lived in Chattanooga. I know, it surprised me too.

Most of my knowledge of Hanukkah in particular and Judaism in general comes, sadly, from popular culture. I’m a big fan of The Big Lebowski (so I’m aware of Shabbos) and I can remember thinking Adam Sandler’s Hanukkah Song was funny. Once. In High School. I hope to learn a thing or two tonight.

For the festivities, we’re supposed to bring Jelly Donuts. We’ll be making a stop at Krispy Kreme, thank you very much. I only wish we’d found out earlier or done a little advanced planning. We could have brought Jones Soda’s Chanukah Pack.

Still, our gift will be appreciated and our attendance will be educational, for ourselves and the kids. After that, I think I’m going to spruce up our home decorations with something in keeping with our own lapsed/waned religious beliefs.

Happy Hanukkah!
