Brewer’s Advent Calendar 2017: Day Six

Today’s beer: Kartäuser Doppelbock Dunkel

I’m fairly certain the Dunkel in the name is redundant here, just noting that this is a dark bock instead of a Maibock.

I’m also no German linguistic expert, so maybe it’s necessary.

Either way this is a maltier beer than last night’s actual Dunkel. This is a Doppelbock.

By style it’s a maltier, more alcoholic version of a Shiner Bock, for example.

If last night’s Dunkel was a Porter in lager form, tonight’s Doppelbock is an Imperial Stout in lager form.

And where the English styles can be cloudy and toasty, their German counterparts are clean, clean & crisp. That’s what comes from lagering.

I’m also no BJCP certified judge, so take all my style notes with a grain of salt.

I do know that I like this example of this style. It’s malty, it’s full-bodied, and it’s about 7.5% alcohol by volume.

If you can’t enjoy a big, bold beer like this by a crackling fire then maybe beer isn’t your thing.

Until tomorrow!
