3-Beer Weekend

I stopped off at the local package store on Friday night to purchase some new and interesting liquid refreshment.

In advance of my full reviews on RateBeer.com (and soon to be Beer Advocate if I can figure out a way to port all that data), here are my thoughts.

  1. Shiner Bock
  2. An old stand-by for me and the missus. She likes it and I think it’s cheap and better than your average macro-brew.

    Sold! Drunk! Next!

  3. Leinenkugel’s Berry Weise
  4. Yeah, um, HELL NO!

After hearing my sister-in-law rave about this beer (and hearing my brother’s gagging noises in the background) I had to try it.

Cheap as Hell ($4.75/six pack) and now available year-round I thought I’d give it a shot. At worst I imagined it being a cheap Frambois imitation.

Imitation indeed. This was like a carbon copy of some old Seagram’s wine cooler.

    Pass and pass.

If I’d have wanted a fruity drink Mr. Dole and Mr. Bacardi would have gotten together.

  5. Heavy Seas Loose Cannon Hop3 Ale
  6. Say that five times fast.

No, seriously, say it. I’ll wait.

    Ok?

So this is billed as a Double IPA containing 3 pounds of hops per barrel (Joy!) but I’m not mouth-feeling it. Sure, it has a good amount of dryness, some peppery spiciness and a wonderful floral boquet.

This just might be the beer that replaces my dearly departed Dogwood Pale Ale. It’s a little too assertive, but I’m enjoying this one.

Two additional tidbits:

  • I drank way too much canned crap on my vacation, mostly Miller derivatives, but one stood out – the delightfully photogenic Stroh’s.
  • I’m going to do a post for the Metblog about the demise of Dogwood and my quest for a suitable replacement. If you’ve got insider knowledge or sudsy tips, lemme know.

Prost!
