Slicker than snot

I got a very sweet deal from Office Depot yesterday, courtesy of SlickDeals.net. One 512MB SD card for my camera, normally $100, properly discounted to $54.97 and mis-discounted to $34.97. What a steal!

After seeing the deal online yesterday I tried for an eternity to get the online ordering/in-store pickup scheme to work. No dice. Either the item wasn’t in stock, wasn’t availble to order online, or the discount didn’t apply. I got all three messages.

Luckily, Jenn and I had to go to Fayetteville to pick up the dog, who was staying with my in-laws while we were in Michigan over the weekend. I popped into the local Office Depot to see if the deal was for real or not. This specific store had sold out of the 512MB cards, but still proudly displayed the $54.97 pricetag, so I was beginning to doubt the deal. A clerk there did search the back inventory and when he came up empty-handed let me know which other stores on the south side still had the cards.

Once I got back to my in-laws house I called my mom who lives about 30 minutes away in Newnan, where the clerk had told me there were still 5 cards in stock. I asked her to write down my “order” and go to her local Office Depot. She called me 15 minutes later and told me that the salesperson had removed the card from the glass case and that the price sticer read $54.97. I told her to have them run a price check and to purchase the card only if it rang up $34.97. I got a quick call 5 minutes later with the simple message, “You got it!” from my Mom.

So thanks, Mom, for running out at 8:30 last night to do my dirty work. And thanks, SlickDeals.net, for pointing me in the right direction.
