Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own

One of the main reasons I’ve been so successful as a single parent this week is that I’ve got a great little girl taking care of me. Raelyn is so smart and so used to her routine that it’s been a fairly easy job for me.

Two things really stand out as cool, extra-special bonuses about the one-on-one time we’ve been able to share.

1) I’ve been able to play music in the car and enjoy some shared time just listening. Jenn & I are huge U2 fans and I don’t think we’ll have to work hard to convert Rae. Her favorite tune on their new album is Sometimes You Can’t Make It On Your Own. I certainly couldn’t have made it through all of those commutes without that song or without the help of Rae-Rae.

2) Snuggle time is the best time you can have with your child. Once they’re toddlers you quickly forget how much time you used to spend just holding them in your arms. I’ve been able to snuggle with Raelyn in our bed before putting her to sleep and snuggle with her on the couch for the same purpose. It felt so great to hold her in my arms, wanting me to tickle her back or put my arms around her. It’s one thing for a baby to need your touch, it’s another thing for a toddler to ask you to embrace them and love them. It’s been incredibly special for me.

So while I think of myself as a pretty good father on my own merits, I have to give credit where credit is due. Raelyn, you’ve helped daddy have one of the best weeks ever. Thank you for being so wonderful.
