Top 5 Gender-bending songs

Not sure why I landed on this topic on a rainy Friday February morning, but I did.

Here’s my personal list. I’m sure I’ll think of a few more after I post.

Feel free to correct and guide me.

  1. The Kinks – Lola
  2. The best example of the sub-genre (hence it’s spot). Ray Davies’ tale of a lad who befriends a transvestite is subversively catchy.

  3. Blur – Girls & Boys
  4. Wikipedia sez: “Lead vocalist Damon Albarn’s withering putdowns of trendy pansexuality and aimless hedonism satirise the party culture in the UK, where groups of youths go on holiday to places like Faliraki and Kavos with the sole intention of getting drunk in the local night-clubs.”

  5. Green Day – Basket Case
  6. Misheard lyric: “I went to a whore HE said my life’s a bore.”
Actual lyric: “I went to a whore who said my life’s a bore.”

  7. Bob Seger – Turn The Page
  8. All the same old cliches,
“Is that a woman or a man?”

  9. Aerosmith – Dude (Looks Like A Lady)
  10. Blatantly obvious bloated 70’s rockers masquerading as 80’s hair rockers poking fun at themselves. Echoes of Seger, sans beard.

Happy listening!

  1. There’s also “scuse me while I kiss this guy” in Jimi Hendrix’s Purple Haze. Okay, so maybe that’s really “scuse me while I kiss the sky,” but whatever.

One of my favorite memories from college was living in an apartment complex a few buildings down from these frat boys who would blare out Lola over and over again, apparently having never listened to the lyrics.

  2. MW says:

To be fair, Green Day did actually print the lyric “I went to a whore HE said my life’s a bore” on the CD insert for the Basket case CD single.
